This year will be my first year away from home. I have been thrusted into the energetic, overwhelming, and  unknown world of college. Of course, my 18th birthday fell into this timespan, and I spent my first birthday away from home. It felt strange. No one woke me up abruptly and sang happy birthday and no gifts were waiting for me downstairs. Despite this, I still had a wonderful birthday. Although, being surrounded by girls I barely know, they filled filled my day with laughter, balloons, and cookies. Thanks again! With that said, here are some tips for adjusting to college based on what I've been going through these past weeks.

  • Don't Be Afraid! Everyone surrounding you is in the same position you are. Chances are they don't know anyone, they're overwhelmed with work, and they've never been this far from home, just like you. I've related with so many people just by bringing up these topics!
  • Patience and communication are must haves! If you're dorming like I am, patience and communication are vital for a healthy rooming situation. Despite how much you connected with your roommates over social networking sites, they're still strangers in a sense. Don't be afraid to say what's on your mind, but do it politely. Most of the time, your roommate will be fine with whatever you have to say and come out with things as well. This could go from music all the way to shower times.
  • Be organized and timely. After the first week of classes, I looked at all my course syllabuses and basically said, "shit...shit...shit..." It really is overwhelming. I went straight to the bookstore and bought the largest desk calendar I could possibly find. This helped me get organized and made me realize what I have to get done and when. Also, once you're organized, it is easier to get involved in school activities like clubs, sports, ect.
  • Have fun! This is probably the most important of all. College is a one time thing for most people, and you have to take advantage of that. Everyone needs to relieve stress and simply get away every now and then. Go out with friends, laugh, and make unforgettable memories.
Lastly, here's what I wore.
